Scars of Coup Attempt, The Peninsula Manila Hotel, Makati, Philippines
The giant Christmas wreath & white board cover the damage caused when a military armored personnel carrier smashed into the lobby of the hotel on 29 November 2007 to quell what is now known as the Manila Peninsula rebellion. A small number of armed forces mutineers marched through Makati & then seized the 2nd floor of the Manila Peninsula, calling for the ousting of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. They surrendered to government forces once the military armored personnel carrier drove into the hotel lobby.
The Manila Hotel is 97 years old and is famous as being the residence of Gen. MacArthur during World War II. Later, the hotel was occupied by Japanese troops (after MacArthur left vowing "I shall return" ... like "I'll be back"). The three-bedroom MacArthur suite rents for $650 a night.
